:life is like a runaway train  Would you say that your life is like a runaway train?  Are you the kind of person who allows life to unfold?  Or the kind who likes to plan your route?

Plan or Unfold?

There are pros and cons to both.  With the former (allowing life to unfold), you can enjoy the scenery, and any surprises on the way.  Some of the surprises will be good ones, others less so.  But you may end up somewhere you didn’t want to be.   And you may also find that you experience more problems that you had expected.  More an unravelling than an unfolding.   You may also have denied yourself the pleasure and benefits of learning from experience.  It isn’t a bad thing necessarily.  But it isn’t putting you in charge or making the most of everything that life presents to you.  It can also lead to stress.

With the latter (planning your route), you set a destination in advance,  If you encounter any detours, delays or, even worse, derailments, you make detours but stay on track.  But you will always know where you are going.

Why is Your Life Like a Runaway Train?

If you feel that your life is like a runaway train, it may be that you have abdicated responsibility for your life to outside forces.  Which is OK, as long as that is your choice and you are happy with what you get.  But it’s a risk, isn’t it?  And can be stressful.  If you are not happy with the results, it means you have to start driving the train yourself.  This involves deciding on your destination (what outcome you want in a situation, your purpose in life, etc) and decide how you are going to get there.

You don’t have to plan everything:  that could get boring).  But you have to have a general direction in mind, perhaps with some points of interest along the way.  You need to be able to spot the signs that you are off-track versus enjoying an unexpected detour, and what you can do about it.  You can still enjoy some surprises but you will spend more of your time travelling purpose-fully towards your intended destination.

Balance

It is all a matter of balance and living life on-purpose so you don’t end up somewhere you don’t want to be, wondering how it went so wrong.
